The Challenge OLR can be used to assess the impact of known or suspected toxic wastes on treatment plant performance. In this mode of operation, the wastewater to be tested is pumped into the reactor at rates well above those anticipated in the full-scale process. In this manner, toxic effects can be seen in the respirometer well before problems are caused in the full-scale process. The OLR-respirometer can be located upstream of the treatment plant to provide an early warning of potentially toxic events.
